Filingpoint A Director Identification Number (DIN) is an 8-digit unique number that the central government assigns to anyone who wants to become or currently is a director in any company. A DIN helps the government keep an accurate database of directors and prevents duplicate entries. A person can have only one DIN and it is valid for his lifetime. However, a DIN can be surrendered if the holder has changed his name or other details. The surrendering person must intimate the DIN to all the companies in which he is a director.
The Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA) has set up measures during the DIN registration process that help to avoid generating duplicate DINs by cross-checking with PAN records. However, sometimes duplicate DINs are created unintentionally. In such cases, the holder of the DIN can apply to MCA by filing Form DIR-5 to surrender the DIN.
To be eligible for a DIN, a person must be at least 18 years old and an Indian citizen. He or she must also have a valid PAN, permanent address proof, and an affidavit verifying these details. People with a criminal record, declared insolvent, or who are already directors of other companies cannot get a DIN.
If a DIN holder does not file e-form DIR-3 KYC or DIR-3 KYC-WEB by the due date (or extended due date), their DIN is deactivated by the MCA. To reactivate the DIN, the individual must submit a DIR-5 application with MCA and pay a fee of Rs. 5,000.
